Menards is one of four glassmakers in Texas that is closing its doors, and a new glass maker is set to open next year in San Antonio, according to a statement from Menards.
Menards was among more than 10 companies that announced plans to close or lay off more than 5,000 employees across the U.S. and Canada, the company said.
“We have always understood that glass is a fundamental component of our business, and we’re sorry to say that today we’ve come to a decision to close our business,” Menards CEO Michael D. Smith said in the statement.
The company said the closures and layoffs were due to the economic downturn.
Menard is the No. 1 glassmaker in the U, with more than 6,000 products and nearly 10,000 glassworkers.
Menys glass, which is used in homes, commercial spaces, office spaces, and automobiles, employs more than 300 people.
The glassmaker had planned to open a new plant in San Marcos in late 2019.
The announcement comes after Menards announced it was closing two plants in South Carolina, which has the highest glass manufacturing rate in the nation.
The closures came after a recent announcement by another glassmaker, the maker of the Menards glass that was shuttered last year.
In February, Menards said it was shutting down three glass plants in Arizona, Texas, and California.
“This is the end of the road for Menards,” Smith said.
Smith also said that the company had lost about 1,000 jobs since the company announced the layoff announcement in November.
